Diabetes book recommendations from the T1D community

The recent T1D Mastery book bundle giveaway included two fantastic books that have been part of my journey to master diabetes. (Bright Spots and Landmines – The diabetes guide I wish someone has handed me, Adam Brown & Think like a pancreas – A practical guide to managing diabetes with insulin, Gary Scheiner). We asked what other books the T1D community would recommend. Here’s what they said:

Never be sick again. Health is a choice, learn how to choose it. – Raymond Francis, M.Sc. with Kester Cotton
Providing a basic understanding of health and disease, this book takes the mystery out of disease. No matter what the present physical condition is, this book gives readers a holistic approach to living that will empower them to get well—and stay well.

One day Raymond Francis, a chemist and a graduate of MIT, found himself in a hospital, battling for his life. The diagnosis: acute chemical hepatitis, chronic fatigue, multiple chemical sensitivities, and several autoimmune syndromes, causing him to suffer fatigue, dizziness, impaired memory, heart palpitations, diarrhea, numbness, seizures and numerous other ailments. Knowing death was imminent unless he took action, Francis decided to research solutions for his disease himself. His findings and eventual recovery led him to conclude that almost all disease can be both prevented and reversed.
In Never Be Sick Again, Francis presents a seminal work based on these findings – a revolutionary theory of health and disease: there is only one disease (malfunctioning cells), only two causes of disease (deficiency and toxicity), and six pathways to health and disease (nutrition, toxins, psychological, physical, genetic, and medical). This remarkable book answers the questions: What is health? What is disease? Why do people get sick? How can disease be prevented? How can it be reversed? It will teach readers, in one easy lesson, an entirely new way to look at health and disease – an approach that is easy to understand, yet so powerful that they may, indeed, never have to be sick again.
Providing a basic understanding of health and disease, this book takes the mystery out of disease. It provides readers, no matter what their present physical condition, a holistic approach to living that will empower them to get well – and stay well.

Sugar Surfing. How to manage type 1 diabetes in a modern world. Dr. Stephen Ponder.
For those considering or already using Continuous Glucose Monitoring, this book takes you beyond the basics and shows you a better way to manage. Interested in eating whatever you like? Prefer a low carb diet? Either way this book will show you how. Sugar Surfing is the first book written to debunk the myths surrounding classic diabetes management while also teaching the reader a better way. More than 50 full color images help the reader to break through the over-reliance on ratios and static thinking which live at the root of unexpected highs and lows; especially for people who already work hard. The traditional method taught by well meaning medical providers is woefully inadequate given the recent advancements in continuous glucose monitoring (CGM). With real time feedback including direction and rate of change, even novice users get better results almost immediately when they use this Endocrinologists’ dynamic approach to managing in the moment. Online resources complement the book by giving readers direct access to the authors. Steve has had type 1 himself for more than 50 years while Kevin is a diabetes Dad and behavioral researcher since 2001. Working together for more than a decade, these two pioneers have helped thousands of people to gain control and live a more normal life in spite of diabetes. https://www.sugarsurfing.com/buy-the-paperback

Even superheros get diabetes. Sue Ganz-Schmitt
Even Superheroes Get Diabetes focuses on the gift within the illness. It is the story of a boy named Kelvin who loves Superheroes. His childhood days are spent in imaginative play–saving the day. One day, his fantasies are marred by the reality of getting diabetes…the incessant finger pricks, shots, and the constant doctor’s appointments. When a mysterious doctor uncovers that Kelvin has superpowers, the story reveals itself as the genesis of a new kind of superhero. Kelvin is monikered ‘Super K’ and uses his superpowers to help other kids with diabetes. The discovery of Super K’s superpowers is akin to the discovery of one’s inner strength in the face of adversity–in the face of illness. The comic book style illustrations by Micah Chambers-Goldberg beautifully connect children and parents to the world of diabetes. The book includes a kid friendly diagram that explains type 1 diabetes, and definitions that discuss both type 1 and type 2 diabetes.
